Howling at the Moon

I know that I promised you the first ever Tasty Tuesday: Human Edition, but tonight is not the night. Maybe next week eh?One of the things that has surprised us most about becoming a part of this amazing online community is how much you are touched by people and pups you have never met and whom are aren’t likely to ever meet. Murphy is one of those pups.

You may recall that back when our blog was new, we introduced you to the Fuzzybutts, Murphy (the Smart One) and (Luvs You) Hudson. It is with tears in our eyes and sadness in our hearts that today we say good bye to Murphy.

We first learned of Luke and his Great Pyranees in 2008. Spurred by the loss and memory of Malcolm, the dog he lost to cancer, Luke packed himself and the Fuzzybutts up and 2dogs, 2000miles was born. Together, Luke, Murphy and Hudson walked from Austin to Boston, raising funds and awareness for canine cancer.

Their arrival in Boston was not the wholly joyous occasion it should have been. Shortly after their trek was complete they learned that Murphy had developed an nasal adenocarcinoma. Cancer.

But Cancer can’t keep a good dog down.

They pushed forward, creating 2milliondogs, celebrating their first annual Puppy up! walk and aggressively treating Murphy’s cancer. Those who follow them on Facebook are lucky to read their fantastic updates – always bright, always hilarious. Murphy (the Smart One) was never reluctant to crack a joke at Huds or Papi’s expense.

Through it all, Luke has blogged, telling his story and Murphy’s, as they fought this disease. Sharing the good days, the bad days and the hard truths that they have faced together. I can’t count the times he has moved me to tears. This past Sunday, on Father’s Day, his amazing post Sermons in Stone showed what an amazing love he has for Murphy and that sometimes, being a good father means letting go.

They say there is no sound sadder than a dog howling at the moon. So tonight, we raise our heads, and in your honour Murph, we howl.

Murphy, the Smart One
Gone, but Never Forgotten
