It’s an extra-special Tasty Tuesday.

Not only is it the yummiest day of the week and we get to check out tons of great dog treat recipes, reviews and giveaways from all over Blogville, but it’s also the second installment of the Two Little Cavalier’s Regressive Dinner for Pets! Today’s theme is Thanksgiving Main Courses.

Gobble Gobble Gobble it down.
You can have all the roast beast, duck l’orange or ham you want, at Casa de Kolchak, it’s all about the bird. If it’s a holiday, the Mama better be making a big juicy turkey. Mama, get your butt in the kitchen (where a Mama belongs) and get cookin’. Oh and for Dog sakes, take those socks off! You should be barefoot. Barefoot and in the kitchen, but hold off on the tiny humans please. Your furry babies keep you busy enough.
Good dogs deserve a good dinner.
Of course you want to share the holiday celebration with your pets. All that juicy meat, the scrumptious veggies, the sweet desserts. It’s a dog’s day. So how exactly do you go about sharing all that tasty goodness with your dog? You have to do it carefully. Fatty leftovers and rich snacks put your dog at risk for an upset tummy, pancreatitis and worse. Are you planning to share the holiday meal with you dog? Help your pet celebrate in style with our tips.
Not quite ready for the full meal deal? Holiday leftovers are easily turned into fantastic healthy grain free dog treats!
One of the Mama’s favourite holiday treats are Thumbprint Cookies.
Rich, buttery shortbread. Sweet sticky raspberry jam. What’s not to love? I never ever get even a little taste. What the Bark is that about, eh? The Mama, that hogger, claims that all that fat and sugar just isn’t dog friendly. Woof to that Mama. WE all know the truth. You just don’t want to share. I know how it is.
Then one day it occurred to me: Why couldn’t she make Thumbprint cookies for Dogs?
What a woofing fantastic idea! Mama, get your butt back in the kitchen. I demand treats! These cookies can be made entirely using holiday leftovers, just be choosy about the leftovers you use. Set aside some potato/sweet potato before you flavour them with butter and salt, use lean turkey meat, you catch my drift, right?
Ingredients look simple, right?

That’s because they are.
  • 1 cup leftover turkey breast meat, finely chopped
  • 1 cup leftover potato or sweet potato
  • 1/2 cup tapioca flour
  • 1/2 cup leftover veggies, like beans, broccoli, squash, carrots – whatever, finely chopped
  • 3 – 4 tablespoons cranberry sauce
Preheat oven to 350F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
In a medium bowl, mix together turkey, potato and veggies. Use your hands to work it all into a well mixed ball. Use your hands to form cookie patties. Lay out patties on cookie sheet, gently press your thumb into each one and fill the thumbprint with cranberry jelly.
Place in oven and bake for 90 minutes. If you would prefer to have a dry crunchy cookie, turn the oven down to 150F and leave the cookies to bake 2 – 3 more hours. Remove from oven and allow to cool completely.
Now we’re talking Mama!
Meat, sweet potato, cranberry? That sounds WAY better than shortbread. I’m already short. I don’t need a cookie that’s going to detract anything more from my height. Plus – it’s like Thanksgiving Dinner, in a single bite. Puptacular!

Hi Jann, Yes! Absolutely these would be every bit as delicious with chicken. We've made something similar and my dogs loved it!
