Tasty Tuesday: Grain-Free Liver Whoopie Pie Dog Treats

Posted by Kolchak on February 13, 2012.

the Mama is so woofing excited.

Now seriously, you guys. She is practically giddy. You ought to see her. Every so often she does this weird little jig that is embarrassing as woof and that gives off one of those squeals of hers that is ridiculously high pitched and obnoxious.

The weirdest things excite her.

Things like a pan. Tonight she finally got to use her new pan. You would think she won the lottery. She bought this pan like 6 weeks ago and immediately knew what she wanted to make with it, but she had to wait for the right occasion.Patience may be a virtue, but it is not one the Mama possesses.

But really? Can you blame her? Wouldn’t you be really woofing excited for Valentine’s Day if you had this pan?!

Yeah. That’s a whoopie pie pan.

I’ll give you a moment to process what that means…

The Mama made doggy Whoopie Pies. Liver Whoopie Pies.

Grain-Free Liver Whoopie Pies. I’m not going to lie to you: They’re breathtaking.

Don’t have a fancy whoopie pan pan like the Mama? That’s OK! This treat is really easy to make using muffin tins. Just grease the pan with olive or coconut oil and put 1/4″ of batter in the bottom of each muffin cup.

Liver Cakes:

  • 1 1/2 cups diced, cooked liver
  • 1 cup mashed potato (dry mashed, with no added liquids)
  • 1 heaping tsp. dried rosemary
  • 2 tablespoons potato flour (or flour, if your dog is wheat tolerant)
  • 1 egg
  • 1/3 cup water or stock
  • olive or coconut oil, to grease the pan
Liver Whoopie Pie Filling
  • 1 1/2 cups diced, cooked liver
  • optional: 1/2 tsp. garlic powder
  • 1/3 – 1/2 cup water or stock
Makin’ the Cakes
Preheat oven to 375F
In a blender, food processor or The Magic Bullet (my fav), combine liver chunks, mashed potato, rosemary, flour, egg and water. Blend until smooth.

Grease the whoopie pie pan and spoon the mixture into the cups. Place in the hot oven and bake for 30 – 40 minutes or until the cakes are firm. Remove from over and allow to cool completely.

Mixing up the whoopie filling

Combine the liver chunks and the garlic in the blender food processor or Magic Bullet (my fav), add in water or stock as needed. Try to keep the paste as stiff as possible; do not over add liquids. You want the paste to be the consistency of a thick icing.

Put the whoopie in the pie

Once the cakes are completely cool, spread a generous layer of liver over half the cakes. Place another cake on top, admire your fabulous culinary skills, then serve.

I ♥ Liver Whoopie Pies.
Seriously, I want them all the time. They are so good.
