Every now and again, you see something that kind of rocks your world.
the Mama had one of those moments at a local kitchen store. She was feeding her kitchen gadgets addiction shopping for important and much needed supplies when she came across something really cool in the small appliances aisle.
It was a dehydrator specifically for making pet treats.
What a fabulous idea.
Making pet treats at home has gone mainstream folks! We didn’t find this at pet store! This wasn’t in the pet section of a department store. This major home goods store doesn’t even have a pet section. And yet, there the Pet Treat Maker was, in all it’s glory, announcing to the world that those of us cooking for our pets are totally legit. the Mama feels waaaaaaaay less crazy now. (Kol’s Note: I have no idea why. She’s still totally cuckoo bananas.)
Why was the Mama so excited?
We’ve been woofing for a long time about all the reasons we really love to make dehydrated dog treats
. We’re big fans of dehydrator treats and all of our cookie recipes
and a lot
of our other treat recipes are ideally suited for dehydrating. We love the simplicity that you can just toss together a few ingredients, plug the dehydrator in and forget about it for a few hour. When you come back, you’ve got treats! Our dehydrator is easily the second most used small appliance at Casa de Kolchak.
(What’s #1? The coffee machine. Mama’s got a caffeine problem.)
Dehydrator treats are so easy to make.
Plus, they can save you a woof-load of money and, since you control the ingredients, you know they’re safe. Besides, the Open Country Pet Treat Maker
comes with everything you need: just add meat and/or veggies and voila! Dog treats your pup will go tail-chasin’ crazy for.
What we loved about Pet Treat Maker:
- Lots of Trays. Some dehydrators can feel a little small. One of the Mama’s old ones barely held a 1/2 lb of meat! The Open Country Pet Treat Maker comes with four drying racks and you can expand it up to 7 racks, using their Add-a-Layer design.
- Easy to clean. With the exception of the blower, the entire dehydrator unit is top-rack, dishwasher friendly. The blower conveniently clicks out of the lid and wipes clean. the Mama always gets a little nervous anytime that raw meat and plastic utensils come into contact, so knowing that she can pop the whole thing in our steamy dishwasher to sanitize it is a huge plus.
Central Air – Many dehydrators have the blower in the lid of the appliance and the air has to circulate from the top tray down to the bottom. We have one of these dehydrators and the Mama finds the top rack dries faster than the bottom. The Open Country Pet Treat Maker has a blower that nestles down in the center of the racks, distributing the air to each rack evenly.
I’ve got two words for you: Jerky Gun. Yeah, I’m going to give you a moment to get over how totally awesome that is. As you may have guessed, we’re not Beggin’ for Strips of anything at Casa de Kolchak, but that doesn’t mean we don’t want nice flat jerky strips! The Jerky gun has three attachments, one for making jerky strips, plus a thin and a thick jerky sticks tip. (Think Puppy Pepperoni without the mystery meat.) The jerky gun was way easier to use than I thought it would be and it was easy to clean with a bottle brush. You also get two dog bone cutters and a fishy cutter.
Tasty Spice Mix – The Pet Treat Maker comes with this yummy smelling spice mix (Seriously, the Mama considered trying it. It smelled that good.) It drives the pups here at Casa de Kolchak WILD! Since “spice” is considered a label ingredient of it’s own, we asked the nice folks at Open Country to clarify what’s in the mix for us. We learned that it does not contain any onion, making it totally pet safe. It does contain garlic powder, an ingredient that makes some pet owners uncomfortable. Here at Casa de Kolchak, we believe the small, cooked amounts of garlic used for seasoning are OK, but we encourage each pet owner to do the research and decide for themselves. The mix does contain some salt, so we wouldn’t recommend it for pets on reduced sodium diets or those with seizure problems.
So? What kind of treats did we make?
With all the recent controversy about jerky treats from China, the Mama wanted to make a tasty jerky we could enjoy. She’s indecisive though, and she has delusions of grandeur, so she ended up making four different tasty treats.
- Chicken Chompers – Just 1 lb. of ground chicken. No extra fillers, no flavouring, just the natural tastiness of ground chicken.
- Spicy Chicken Chompers - 1 lb. of ground chicken + the tasty Open Country spice mix
- Chicken & Sweet Potato Chompers - 1/2 lb of ground chicken + 2 cups mashed sweet potato
- Chicken & Cheese Chompers - 1 lb of ground chicken + 1/2 cup of Parmesan cheese crumbles
Step one: Mix ingredients
Step Two: Fill Jerky Gun
Step Three: Plug in dehydrator and wait
Step Four: Unplug dehydrator
Seriously. It’s THAT easy.
These are the Chicken Chompers.
Mama (the rocket scientist) ripped them up into miserly size appropriate,
bite sized pieces and then realized,
“DUH! I should have taken a picture first!” She’s real swift, that Mama of mine.
We love all the little touches that make this dehydrator perfect for making pet treats. It even comes with a book of recipes for all sorts of dog, cat, hamster, gerbil, bird and even horse treats! Plus, this dehydrator has a woof worthy price. You can get it on Amazon for around $30 – $50
