Confessions of a Raw Fed Dog: Want to learn more?

Posted by Kolchak on July 18, 2012.

Once upon a time, not that long ago, the Felix and I ate kibble.

Good kibble. Expensive kibble. We ate pretty good! We were pretty healthy too. Our teeth were OK, though the Felix needed to have an extraction and a cleaning. I was a tad overweight, if you believe anything that slanderous Mama has to say. Our breath could knock out an elephant (he he he) and most importantly, the Felix was still a very itchy boy.

Felix’s allergies improved drastically when we switched to a grain-free kibble, but they still weren’t “cured”.

The Mama went to a weekend long Expo on natural pet health where she met many holistic vets. She noted that of all the speakers at the expo, all of the folks sharing their expertise in many aspects of pet care, they were all feeding their dogs a raw diet. The Mama was intrigued and so, our journey to raw feeding was started.

One of the vets Mama met was Dr. Peter Dobias. Soft spoken, logical, and passionate about pet health, the Mama was impressed with what he had to say. He was so generous with his time and knowledge; the Mama left that day feeling like a change to raw was exactly what the Felix needed.

It was. Today the Felix is off all of his allergy medications and he’s pretty much itchy free.

To the Mama, that makes every dollar spent on human-grade meats, whole food supplements and other healthy meals totally worth it.

Are you interested in learning more about raw feeding?

Tomorrow, at 6 PM PST, Dr. Dobias is hosting a webinar: A Complete Guide to Natural Feeding. More and more people are abandoning kibble and moving towards a more natural way of feeding their dogs. In this webinar, Dr. Dobias wants to help bring clarity and give people the confidence they need to feed their dog a raw diet.

The webinar is are free, however donations are greatly appreciated.  100% of the webinar proceeds go directly to Healing Foundation, a registered non-profit organization.  This year’s cause is to educate people on the damaging effect of choke, prong and shock collars and collect more funds to facilitate holistic medical research.

Speaking of raw feeding, the AVMA is considering a a policy where they would “discourage” the feeding of raw meat products to our pets. This isn’t just an issue for raw feeders. It’s an issue for anyone who believes it is their right to decide how to feed their pets.
I am highly opposed to any policy where the AVMA feels like they can tell me how to best feed my pets without ever having examined them and without knowing their health status.
I am opposed to any policy that rejects a natural diet (meaning what a dog would eat in the wild) as dangerous without taking the possible benefits into account when looking at the possible disadvantages.

I’m opposed to any policy against alternative feed protocols as long as the AVMA is accepting funds (lots of funds) from the kibble companies. It feels too much like the policy was “bought”. The fact that much of the funds are used for “education” of AVMA members does not make me feel any better.
“Discourage” is not a very strong word and it’s not legally binding. This policy will not stop us from feeding raw today, next week or likely even next year. What this policy has the power to do is open the door for lobbyists working for the kibble companies to lobby politicians to someday make this policy a law.
If you feel like I do and believe that allowing the AVMA to enact this policy would be a sad misstep that could potentially lead to the loss of our right to feed our pets as we believe best, then please sign the petition found here and consider writing the AVMA at avmainfo@avma.org
