K9 Kamp is Here with Fitness Fun and Games

k9 kamp canine fitness blog challengeHoly Woof! I can hardly believe that it’s time for another K9 Kamp!

When Peggy and I chose October as a K9 Kamp month, I don’t think we realized just how perfect the timing would be. After all, it’s National Walk Your Dog Week and October is National Pet Obesity Month.

More than half the canine population in the US, or 36.7 million dogs, are over weight, according to their veterinarian.

That is a TON of dogs that need to get their diet in check and get their butts moving. That’s a big deal. We get it. It’s not always easy to get out and get active with your dog and sometimes, it’s too easy to equate food with love. We’re killing our pets with kindness. It’s time for some tough love.

Good thing that getting fit with Fido can also be a lot of fun.

That is the theme of this month’s K9 Kamp Challenge: Fitness fun & games. We want to focus on all the ways you can get fit with your dog and have fun doing it. After all, it’s way easier to make time for fitness if you enjoy what you’re doing. So, to you our faithful kampers, we issue this challenge: DO MORE.

Get active with your dog, 30 minutes extra, 3 or 4 times a week.

So, what can you do to get fit and have fun?

Here are some Casa de Kolchak favourites and things we’d love to try:

  • Fetch (or better yet, Fetch It Yourself!)
  • Tug of War
  • Frisbee
  • Catch Me if You Can
  • Monkey in the Middle
  • Agility (or build your own obstacle course)
  • Treiball (or just kick an exercise ball around in the yard)
  • Flyball
As always, we’re rewarding our fabulous Kampers with some cool prizes! k9kamp600

Gizmo and I are all ready for Kamp and we’ve added watersports to our activity list…first paddleboarding and now kayaking…and of course as the weather cools 9it’s got to cool off one day) we’ll be doing longer geo hikes

Ohhhhhh, I so wish it was warm enough for water sports here! Of course, my dogs hate the water, so I don’t know how that would work, but…yeah. *I* would love it!

We LOVE a game we call “chase the treat.” I sit at the top of the stairs and toss a teeny tiny treat down. Coop chases it down then runs back up. Repeat many (MANY in Coop’s case) times. Of course, I’m just sitting there tossing treats, so… I’ll have to think of something better for K9 Kamp!

Ha ha ha ha! That is amazing. Kolchak would play that game FOREVER. He would be so tired he was falling over before he would stop. Fabulous idea.

haha! We played a similar game, but it was at a park. We would throw a treat somewhere off in the grass, so Luna had to run and sniff to find the treat.

We are excited that K9Kamp is back since we kind of lost focus with the move during the last session. This time we have a personal goal though, so it will be great! We are planning to get active everyday in October! It’s started out rough. On day 2, Luna found some bread during our jog and sat down to eat it. Fortunately, she didn’t find anything to snack on yesterday.

Oh dog !!! We are so in this year….we are into hiking big time at the moment and have been exploring all the mountain bike paths around our park

We’re using a lot of natural obstacles we find on our walks to increase what we’re doing. We’re having fun.
