Tis the season for turkey!

(Kol’s Note: TURKEY ALL THINGS!) Now that your dogs are dressed properly for Turkey Day, they’re ready for the noms!

Many people are very tempted to sneak the dogs some table scraps during Thanksgiving, but if you’re not careful, that can be dangerous.  There are tons of food that aren’t safe to share with your pets. (Still want to share a dog safe holiday meal? Check out these tips.)

These turkey dinner chip dog treats are totally dog friendly.

If you whip up a batch before the feasting day and break them into small pieces, you can provide them to your guests to give sparingly to the canine attendees!  Make sure to speak with all of your guests when they arrive to make sure they know not to feed your dogs table food and that appropriate treats are available if they can’t resist the urge.

Keep your dogs safe this Thanksgiving with a “safe snacking” dog bowl filled with approved treats. We use carrots, sweet bell pepper, white meat turkey, kibble pieces, and, of course, a few turkey dinner chips. Put out the bowl, with a sign inviting guests to share, and relax knowing that no one is slipping turkey skin and ham hocks under the table.

Turkey Dinner Chip Dehydrator Dog Treats are also a great way to use up a few dog friendly left overs after the big day.

Just make sure you set aside some plain, veggies before they’ve been seasoned/butter and never use anything that has been cooked with onions.

Ingredients

Here’s what you need to make ~4 trays of purree

– 4 cups chopped cranberries

– 4 cups green beans

– 4 cups peas

– 4 cups carrots

– 8 tbsp. ground flax

–  2 cups cooked, finely chopped or ground turkey

Step One:

Put all of the veggies and fruits into the stock pot with some water and put on the stove to cook – stir often.  The longer you cook this combo, the easier it will be to puree.  You want the veggies to be mushy.

Cooking

Step Two:

Puree the cooked veggies/fruits, until you have a fairly smooth mix.  It doesn’t have to be “soup smooth” but you don’t want big chunks.  (Yes, it looks gross but I promise the dogs will love it!)

Puree

Step Three:

Prep your dehydrator trays. If you don’t have fruit leather trays, cut parchment paper to fit your trays. My recent LIFE CHANGING discovery is to coat each tray/parchment piece with a very thin layer of melted coconut oil.  It makes the final product come off so much easier!

Step Four:

Measure out enough puree to fill one of your dehydrator trays.  Each of my trays handles 3 cups of puree.  So I scooped out 3 cups of puree, added 2 TBSP of ground flax to that and mixed it up with a silicone spatula.

Carefully spread the mixture into your trays.  Try to spread them as evenly as possible.  Then sprinkle Turkey Bits evenly over each poured tray.  Complete steps four and five for each tray until your puree is used up.

Step Five:

Assemble your dehydrator per the instructions and then…. All together now: “SET IT AND FORGET IT!”
Ok, don’t forget it entirely!  But, these treats are meant to be crispy chips and not leathers, so it’s going to take a decent amount of time in the dehydrator.  The exact timing is going to depend on several things: your dehydrator, how many trays you have filled, how thickly the trays are poured, the atmospheric humidity, etc.  I let mine go for at least 12 hours.  A dried tray will show some shrinking:

Step Six:

Break them up into appropriately sized treats for your dog.  If you encounter any areas that aren’t entirely dried, break off the dried parts and pop the rest back in the dehydrator for a bit.

Broken into Chips

And that’s it!

Store the treats in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. (Sealed mason jars work great! So far, I have not had any problems with them staying fresh for many months.)

YUMMY- Kilo and I both love pumpkin and both need to watch our treats. I bake simple oven chips but these look so delicious. I have got to get a dehydrator. Would work on Kale and other stuff too. Thanks!! X Susie and Kilo

Wow - I can't believe all the positive response to my post here!

I can definitely say my dehydrator has paid for itself several times over now in the money I have saved on dog treats! (AND! Kayla has slimmed down considerably) I highly suggest one for the health-conscious, DIY dog owner! I will surely have how-tos for other dehydrator treats in the future! 99% of my girls' treats are now made in my dehydrator :)
