The Holidays are one of my favourite times of year.
It can be crazy and busy and full of hustle and bustle, but my favourite moments are the quiet ones at the ends of those frantic days when I finally get to hang out with my dogs again. The holidays can be a rough month for dogs and their people! Lots of parties, many of which aren’t dog friendly. Trips to the mall. Special Christmas outings. I always seem to be snuggled up at home less during the holidays and yet, it’s what I want to be doing the most.
I like to celebrate by making time for a few of my favourite dog-friendly holiday traditions.
- Long walks among the Christmas lights – So many people really go out of their way to put on beautiful holiday displays. I love how merry and bright our evening walks feel when we explore a neighbourhood that is all lit up for the Holidays.
- Holiday Dog Treats – Is it just me or are we all really looking forward to the flood of amazing holiday food? In my family, food is love, so it should come as no surprise that I take to the kitchen to make some special dog treats for the Holidays. My dog’s favourite is our recipe for Peanut Butter Gingerbread Dog Treats. They like them best soft and fresh, but I always toss a few into the dehydrator for a crunchy treat.
- Jolabokaflod – I know, it sounds a little like I just made that word up, but it’s legit. You can google it. They have this amazing tradition in Iceland where many people give the gift of books to be opened on Christmas Eve and then the evening is spent reading, so in the months before a flood of new books are published. BE STILL MY HEART. I simply can’t think of a lovelier way to spend Christmas Eve than snuggled up with a box, a cocoa and my sweet dogs.
No matter what your traditions are, the most important part of the holiday is to remember to slow down and spend some time with the ones you love: human and canine.

If you’ve been looking for a versatile vacuum that’s powerful, but not too bulky, look no further. We all know keeping the fur tumbleweeds at bay can be a full time job for dog lovers, especially in the winter when my dog’s shedding seems to kick into high gear. I love that the hand attachment pops off this vacuum so you can go from floors to furniture in no time flat.
