It’s Pumpkin Season!

I am totally baffled by the pumpkin ritual. Most veggies just get chopped up and tossed into the oven, but not the pumpkins. The pumpkins get all crazy and Mama carves creepy faces into them. I couldn’t tell you why. Frankly, that woman is nuts. She calls these knifey-creations of hers jack-o-lanterns and as far as I can tell, they serve absolutely no purpose. They’re just freaky and weird. No wonder Mama likes them. They sit on the steps looking stupid for days. Then she spends a day dressed up all weird and tiny humans come to the house dressed funny too. Then they participate in some sort of bizarre ritual where they yell TRICK OR TREAT and Mama gives them Candy. (If I barked at Mama, I would NOT get a treat. Just go ahead and try it. SUCH a double standard.) And the whole time, the pumpkins just sit there with their eerie, freakshow eyes making me totally uncomfortable. There’s one good thing about them though: She bakes them into treats!

At least they eventually become something good right? Some dogs would be superstitious about cooking with demon pumpkins, but not me. They still taste fine. Even if your Mama doesn’t make evil pumpkin faces, you can still make today’s treats using 100% pure pumpkin. They turn out just as tasty and there’s less of a chance that you’ll be haunted.

Pumpkin & Peanut Butter Dog Treats

Tasty Tuesday: Pumpkin & Peanut Butter Dog Treat Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 2 1/2c. Oatmeal
  • 1c. Red Mill Gluten Free Baking Mix or All Purpose Flour
  • 1c. Canned Or Stewed Pumpkin
  • 1 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp ground ginger
  • 1 tsp ground clove
  • 1/2c. Peanut Butter
  • 1 Egg

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350F.

In a blender, food processor or (my Fav) the Magic Bullet, grind the oatmeal into a rough flour. Toss it into a large bowl and sift in Kolchak's flour mix. Add pumpkin, peanut butter, egg & pie spice. Mix well. Dough should be loose, but not gooey. If required, add additional flour to make it workable.

Turn out dough onto floured surface. Using a rolling pin, roll dough out to 1/4" thick. Use a cookie cutter to cut into bone shapes (or any other shape you like! You could even just use a knife or a pizza cutter to make squares)

Place on parchment or silicone lined baking sheets. Place in oven and bake for 35 to 40 minutes or until golden on the edges. When done, place on cooling rack.

Do your people have any weird pumpkin rituals?
