Kol’s Note: Mama spent all weekend gallivanting about going to see a bunch of humans jump around in tights,  wandering around eating German food and of all the hurtful things, baking HUMAN cookies. **gasp** Since she’s totally neglecting me and her responsibility to keep bring you guys new and exciting dog treats, she’s lucky that the very talented  Gretchen from Biskit’s Barkery decided to take pity on her and share some super awesome treats.

How pretty are these?! Gretchen paired a tasty peanut butter cookie with a yummy carob filling then decorated the cookies with just a bit of flair and the K9 Cakery icing (<-affiliate link) to make them look all festive.

Do you want to surprise the special pup in your life with these pretty treats?

Peanut Butter & Carob Dog Treats

Ingredients:

  • Cookies:
  • 1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 1/2 cups white flour
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons coconut or olive oil
  • Filling:
  • 2 – tablespoons coconut oil
  • 2 – cups unsweetened carob chips
  • 2/3 – cup of natural peanut butter
  • Decor:
  • Fido's Yogurt Royal Icing

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 350 F. Combine oil, peanut butter and water. Add flour, one cup at a time, forming a dough. Knead dough into firm ball and roll to 1/4 inch thickness.

Cut with desired cutter. Place on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake at 350 F for 20 minutes.

Place carob, peanut butter and oil in a saucepan. Cook at low heat constantly until chips are melted and mixture is smooth. Mix well. Let the mix thicken & cool slightly, then place small scoops on each cookie. Sandwich cookies together.

If desired, mix Fido's Royal Icing as per package directions. Add a small amount of powdered, natural food colours. Using a #3 tip, pipe small designs on each cookie.

how long do these last for and can they be frozen?

I would treat these like any fresh baked cookie so they'll likely be good for 5 - 7 days, depending on the humidity and temperature where you live. If you wanted to preserve them longer, the best way is to use a fine tooth fork or a tooth pick to prick holes in them, then put them in the oven at the lowest possible temp for 4 - 8 hours, flipping every couple hours. They are done when the snap in half crisply and there is no moisture left in the center. This will dehydrate them, so they'll keep for a few months. You can freeze them, but if the container is not air tight, the moisture from the ice/food in the freezer will get in and make them go soggy and/or crumble when they defrost.
