Last week, I would have sworn that Spring was upon us.

The grass was green, the trees were growing new leaves and I had tiny, baby tulips on my deck. And then Mother Nature (the vindictive jerk) did this:

puggle in the snow

She dropped a woof load of snow all over my ‘hood. All this chilly weather has us really longing for something that reminds us of warmer, happier days. Strawberries were on sale at our local market, so I splurged and bought three big baskets…and then promptly forgot about them. By the time I remembered they were in the fridge I had two options: Gorge myself on berries like a bear preparing for a long winter nap or find a way to preserve them.

It seemed ridiculous to make a frozen treat when the whole town was covered with a blanket of snow. I decided to take the easy way our and dry them. I’m actually a huge fan of dried strawberries – and so are the dogs. I like to toss them on cereal or in oatmeal. They’re great in small chunks on salad and to die for on ice cream. The dogs and I will even just munch on them while we’re cuddled on the couch.

While I enjoy them without any added flavouring, the dogs *go absolutely bonkers* for these if I cover them with a thin layer of “meat dust” before drying.

Dehydrated Strawberry Snacks for Pups & People

Ingredients:

  • 16 oz. of fresh or frozen sliced strawberries
  • optional for dogs only: 2 tbsp. freeze dried 100% meat treats, crushed
  • or 2 tbsp. liver powder
  • or 2 tbsp. carob powder

Instructions

DEHYDRATOR METHOD:

Lay out strawberries on unlined dehydrator trays, taking care to keep them from touching. If desired, sprinkle with flavour booster.

Dry for 3 - 4 hours, until they are no longer sticky or tacky to the touch, but still pliable. Store in an airtight container.

OVEN METHOD:

Preheat oven to 200F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Lay out strawberries taking care to keep them from touching. If desired, sprinkle with flavour booster.

Dry for 3 - 4 hours, until they are no longer sticky or tacky to the touch, but still pliable. Store in an airtight container.

We made ours with liver dust this week, but Koly and Fe love them no matter what I flavour them with or even if I don’t flavour them at all!

Does your dog eat fruit? Have you ever tried spicing fruit up with a bit of a flavour booster?

Yummy, Honey and I love fresh and dehydrated strawberries. I usually rely on freezing when I pick strawberries but I'll definitely add drying to my preservation plans.

Thanks for including the oven dehydration plans. I've thought about buying a dehydrator but hate having standalone kitchen appliances. As long as I can dry things in the oven, I guess I'll stick with that.

What a great idea to save the strawberries rather than throw them out! Other than myself and the dog, my pet rat would absolutely LOVE this snack.

Your pet WHAT?! *shudder* I am sure he's lovely, but I dunno. I'm not sure rodents are my thing.

I love that there's an oven option. This is something that we can definitely do!

Yum! My humans never thought of dehydrating strawberries, and we live just about an hour away from a town that calls itself the Strawberry Capitol of the World, or something like that, so we get tons of strawberries in spring. Mommy says she's going to dehydrate some strawberries for my daddy to have with his cereal. I sure hope he shares with me. :-)
