There’s always something so wholesome about baking dog treats at home.

I rarely make human cookies, but making dog biscuits makes me feel so accomplished and, truth be told, I love spoiling my dog with something made just for him. I hesitated to call these brownies though – since they’re really more of a thin, dense cake.

Since they’re super moist, they don’t have the longest shelf life. I usually freeze half the batch and pull them out as needed.

Salmon & Sweet Potato Soft Dog Treat Recipe

Kol's Notes salmon and sweet potato dog treat recipe

This soft, moist salmon and sweet potato dog treat recipe is sure to be a fast favourite of your best doggo

Ingredients

  • 1 can salmon
  • 1 medium sweet potato, baked in the skin
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/3 c. coconut flour
  • coconut oil, as needed to grease the pan or parchment

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350F
  2. In a medium bowl, beat the eggs until fluffy.
  3. Fold in the coconut flour and salmon.
  4. Allow the mixture to rest for 10 minutes while the coconut flour absorbs the mixture
  5. Remove the sweet potato from it's skin and mash it until it is smooth
  6. Fold mashed sweet potato.
  7. Grease a 9x9 cake pan with coconut oil
  8. Press the mix into your pan
  9. bake for 60-70 minutes until the mixture is firm, edges are golden and a tooth pick comes out clean.
  10. Allow to cool and slice into squares.

Notes

Store in the fridge for up to 5 days or the freezer for up to three months.

If you want a crunchy treat, you can return the squares to the oven on a baking sheet and bake at 150 for 3 -4 hours or in a food dehydrator for 4-6 hours. Treats are done when they break crisply in half and no moisture remains in the middle. Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place.

If your dog isn’t a salon lover, this treat could easily be made with canned chicken or tuna!

Why not try it all three ways to see which your pooch likes best?

Hi! Do you think oat flour could be used in place of coconut flour? My dog is allergic to it. Thanks!

No I don't think it would because the two flours are so structurally different and take moisture in very different ways, BUT I can bump this recipe to the top of my redevelopment list and offer an oat version when I repost it!

Thank you, Jodi

Can you use a different type of flour instead of coconut flour? (Almond flour, whole wheat, tapioca flour, etc.) I

Unfortunately, coconut flour is really hard to swap with another flour type. I can definitely test a version using a different flour, if you like?
