I don’t know who the dog that shared this delightful little bark of advice was, but I’m pretty sure he’s been my spirit animal this week. (Either that, or a Grey Goose, if you catch my drift.)
It hasn’t been the best week at Casa de Kolchak.
You may have noticed that this is the first new post we’ve put up since we shared our list of summer fruits that you can share with your dog for Tasty Tuesday. We’ve been super quiet on Facebook, pretty much completely MIA on Twitter and don’t even check our Google + page. (No seriously, don’t. We neglect our G+ page on a normal week, forget when we’ve got stuff going on!)
It all started on Sunday.
After our morning walk and a cup (or three) of coffee, I flipped on the ol’ MacBook and found that the trackpad was having a dance party that I wasn’t invited to. The mouse was all over the place, clicking erratically and generally acting up. As a blogger, my computer is pretty much like my third child (two fur kids, one electronic one) and the thought that it was seriously sick was very upsetting. A trip to to the repair shop did not improve my situation. Fast forward a few days and we learned that the computer needed major work that we couldn’t afford. How does one blog with no computer? Was this going to be the end of Kol’s Notes for the forseeable future? It seemed likely.
Captain Kangaroo (aka the Felix) has been extra jumpy.
Jumping isn’t exactly great for a dog with a partially torn ACL and it’s putting a serious damper on our conservative management plans. I do not want to have to kennel him, nor do I want to put him through an unnecessary surgery that he is not a good candidate for. (More on that soon. We have so much achey breaky ACL news to share.) Keeping him from jumping has been difficult and while I feel like he knows he’s not supposed to jump, he’s been TOTALLY sassy, sitting like he is supposed to to ask to be lifted up onto the bed or the couch and then jumping at the last second before you grab him. (GAH! Seriously Felix?! Are you woofing kidding me?!) We’re working on it, but let’s be real: it’s making me crazy.
Other fun stuff?
My carpal tunnel is acting up. I had a wretched allergic reaction to soy the other day. I was late for work and dropped my its-not-breaking-my-diet-if-no-one-sees-me-eat-it donut. I really wanted that doughnut. Kol keeps waking me up at dawn by dancing on my face and begging for breakfast and remember that Petties Award I was so excited to be a finalist for? Turns out that Dogstime Media majorly woofed up and I’m not nominated after all. WHOMP WHOMP. Dogstime released an “updated” list of nominees and sadly, Kol’s Notes is not among them. To add insult to injury, we were not told this was going to happen. We, along with all of the nominees, received a form letter announcing that there had been a miscount and an updated list would be posted within the hour. We did not receive an email letting us know we were no longer nominated. We did not receive an apology for the error. Just a link, at the same time the rest of the interwebz found out. Truth be told, some of you found out that we were no longer a finalist before I did.
If you can’t eat it or play with it, pee on it and walk away.
Life is amazing though. You would think that with all this dog poo being thrown my way, this would have been a bad week, but it wasn’t.
This week was amazing.
Ok, I know you guys. That sounds insane. Call me crazy, yo, but it has been.
Upon hearing that my computer was on the fritz, I had family, real life friends and blogging friends all step forward to say they would not let Kol’s Notes go dark. I was offered loaner lap tops, help fixing the problem, ideas for cost effective ways to circumvent the problem and even the offer of a loan to get the repairs immediately. I may have had a broken computer, but I had this super amazing group who know how important this site is to me and who made me realize that broken computer was nothing more than an inconvenience that we could fix.
The week of having no laptop allowed me the chance to rest my wrist. I got to catch up on my reading (Y’all, there’s a new Chet & Bernie mystery coming out and I’ve got a sneak peek!), plus I did some crafting and treat making (fun things to follow guy. Fun. Things.) I’ve spent time with the dogs working on training and play. It’s been a long time since I took a few days off like that and I have to say, I enjoyed them. I never would have done that if my laptop was working. Sometimes you need a reminder to unplug. And in the end, the news was not quite as dire as it originally seemed. The computer needs a pricey repair, but it might be covered by the extended warranty and in the meantime, a USB mouse works just fine, which is good because Felix needs my money more than Apple does.
Felix is going to be just fine too and though the jumping is a frustration, we have systems in place to limit it. He hasn’t been in pain, so that is all that counts. We’re working on training. After consulting his vet and physical therapist, we’ve adjusted his supplements and we have some physical therapies and treatments booked to help. Soon, this achey breaky ACL will be a thing of that past and Fe will be as good as certified, pre-owned “new”. I’m lucky to have the time on my hands, the expertise available and the funds to do what Fe needs to get better. I’m lucky to have a Fe to worry over.
And while I am truly frustrated and disappointed by the complete lack of respect and caring that Dogstime Media has shown in the handling of the situation, I am completely overwhelmed by the love and support you all have shown me in your emails, Facebook comments and private messages. I am not sad to see our name removed from the finalists list. I’m not a huge fan of voting contests and I don’t love asking you guys to take time out of your lives to go vote every day, though I am truly grateful and touched that people enjoy our blog enough to nominate us.
The fact that you all come to visit and read our posts, share the things you enjoy with your networks, take the time to hang out with us on Facebook, inspire us with your Pinterest pins and share your dogs and your time with us is all the recognition we need to know that what we do is so worth it. Every single blog that was on the list before it was revised and every blog that is there now is awesome in their own right and truly deserves to be recognized. I sincerely hope that the nominees who remain will not allow the disappointment of those of us who were removed or the truly unfortunate mistake of Dogstime to detract in anyway from their own excitement and celebration of being nominated. Many of my friends are still nominated and I am so genuinely excited for them.
And I hope, if y’all have an extra minute or two, you’ll take some time to visit my fellow psuedo-finalists. While Dogstime may not have treated them very kindly or with much consideration, I consider them to be wonderful friends, amazing bloggers and worthy of much recognition, in their own right.
That soy allergy still sucks though. Do you know how hard it is to not eat edamame?! And I want a replacement doughnut. Bad.
If you can’t eat it or play with it, pee on it and walk away.
Dogs don’t dwell on bad days. Through all this, Koly and Fe were nothing but 110% pleased that we were hanging out together and having fun. They live in the moment, taking joy in the people in our life and the things we do together. All they know about my computer is that it hogs the spot in my lap. They don’t know what a Pettie is, and if they did, I guarantee they would have no use for it since they can’t eat it or play with it. I’m taking a page from their book. I’m going to focus on things that make me happy and just pee on the rest.
As with all bad weeks, this one wasn’t actually that bad at all.
Any week where you get so many reminders that you have a lot of people in your life who care is a good one.
How do you deal with stressful days, bad weeks and things that just aren’t going your way? How does your dog deal with them? Would you get another doughnut? (Please say yes.)
UPDATE: While everything I say in this post remains true, my anger and frustration with Dogtime Media continues to be riled this morning, in reading their repsonse to the comments on their Facebook announcement of their major error. This cute puppy picture remains the sum total of the apology we have received for the mistake and we have yet to receive a personal response from Dogstime regarding the error. I am absolutely amazed at the lacck of respect they have shown us and our amazing readers. You can see why I am so riled up by clicking here.
