‘Twas the Night Before Christmas at Casa de Kolchak
and the puggle was so full of treats that he might yak.
The Mama had wrapped all the presents with care,
each with ribbons and bows and dog-themed holiday flair.
But paper can’t hide the scent of big, meaty chews
and Koly knew that he had nothing to lose.
As the humans were sleeping, warm and snug in the bed
the dogs had snuck to the tree and opened gifts instead.
They ate bullies and windees and pumpers galore,
Mama had bought all the Jones in the store!
When she awoke from her slumber, then went down to the tree,
where she found one very stuffed Koly and super full Fe.
I wish I could say that this was a fanciful story, but I’ll be honest: it’s based on true events.
One Christmas, when I was still very much a novice dog owner, I made the incredibly silly mistake of wrapping a woof load of treats for Koly and Fe and placing them under the tree. You guys, I honestly don’t know what I was thinking. This was back in the day, before Koly knew commands like “off” and “leave it”. This was before Felix’s allergies were under control and his packages contained novel proteins like pork and lamb, where Koly’s had been beef & chicken. As I surveyed the scene, I couldn’t help by laugh: at my stupidity, at their mischievousness and at the pure absurdity of the moment.
From that Christmas on, dog treats are kept firmly up of the floor, packed into stockings and hung from dog toy stocking hangers.
Seriously, you guys, our stocking hangers are the EASIEST EVER and every year, they double as a gift. To make a set of your own, just pick up plain, non decorative stocking hangers. (Ours are from Target and were $10 for 2.) Head to your favourite pet store and pick up two Christmas themed dog toys. This year, we chose Olaf and Sven. Display the toys on top of the stocking hangers as decor leading up to the big day, then on Christmas morning, share the stockings and the toys with your dogs. It’s so easy, even Koly can do it.
This way, I can keep the treats in the stockings, hung safely on the mantle and out of puggle mouths. After all, can you really blame a dog for tearing into a gift that smells THAT GOOD?!
