Almost three years ago, I shared a dog treat recipe that is easily one of our most popular, ever. Our canned food dog cookie recipe has just three ingredients, it’s so woofing easy and it has a flavour dogs LOVE.  They’re great because they’re made with canned dog food, which means you can make them in any flavour your dog likes and choose a protein they can eat. For Felix, that means we can turn his favourite Wild Calling Pheasant or Rabbit canned dog food into his favourite cookies, so so easily.

It’s been pinned like a squillion times and I get a ton of emails asking one very specific question:

Can you make these with a cookie cutter?

Now, because I am a little slow on the uptake, my answer has always been “maybe?”, “I dunno?” or “In theory, yes, I think they might be able to?” You know, in three years, it just never once occurred to me to try it? I KNOW RIGHT? I’m amazed at my own ridiculousness. I decided to give it whirl and see what happened.

You guys, you can TOTALLY make canned food dog treats with cookie cutters.

You just have to make one itsy bitsy change. Here’s what you need:

  • 1 – 13 oz can of 96% meat canned dog food (This recipe was developed using Wild Calling.)
  • 2 cups + 2 tbsp. Bob’s Red Mill Gluten Free Flour Mix or Regular White Flour
  • 1 egg

Here’s how we do it:

Preheat oven to 350F and line a cookie sheet with a silicone mat or parchment paper.

In a bowl, mix together all three ingredients. I found mixing it with a mixing spoon SO FRUSTRATING, so I got in there and got my hands dirty.

Turn out your dough onto a lightly floured surface. Roll out to approx. 1/4″ thick and cut into shapes with a cookie cutter.

Set cookies on the cookie sheet. (You can sit them fairly close together, as these don’t really spread.) Bake for 17 – 20 minutes, until the bottoms are golden brown. If you prefer a crunchy treat,  turn the oven down to 150F and bake for an additional 4 hours (or so) until cookies break crisp and are dry all the way through.

That’s it! These cookies are just THAT easy.

Does your dog have a favourite canned food that could become a cookie?

Could you use any of the following ingredients instead of the gluten free or white flour? 1) wheat flour, 2) make your own oat flour with rolled oats(not the instant kind), 3) use the same brand of dry kibble as the wet food being used & turn the dry kibble into a flour with a food processor, blender ,etc to make a "kibble flour" .

Excellent, excellent questions!

You could sub up to 50% of the all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour, but since whole wheat has a higher protein content, any more would likely result in a very tough finished product.

You can absolutely replace the flour with oat flour, however, you'd want to replace by WEIGHT, not volume, since oat flour doesn't convert cup to cup.

The kibble was a dismal fail for me. I tried it. It didn't hold together well.

If you decide to experiment, I'd love to know the outcome!

I think I remember the original recipe. I think I might have actually bought a can to try this, but I never did. You know how I am about baking for them. LOL

Still, if I WERE going to bake for them, this would be it. EXCEPT i wouldn't roll out the dough, I'd probably just plop the cookies down. :-)

Thanks for joining the showcase!

GREAT idea - I use Canned EN when the dogs have upset stomachs or if I need to fill a kong and I want it to be low in calories. That said - I never thought to make canned food cookies for the dogs and that would also save me from buying so many grain free treats. Such a novel idea - thank you for this!
