Now that the weather has turned nice here at Casa de Kolchak, we’re spending more and more time out on the deck. On the weekends, we’ve been hanging out out there, basking in the late morning sun, me sipping a cup of coffee and the dogs happily unstuffing a Kong.
For as long as I can remember, we’ve had a “go to” Kong recipe.
When you have a dog as food motivated as Koly, Kong stuffing is an art.
You have to let each layer unpack itself, with it getting more and more tantalizing the deeper you go.
Layer 1: Cheese – just a tiny piece, crammed into the tiny opening at the bottom.
Layer 2: Liver treats and a tiny cookie or two.
Layer 3: Dried Green Beans, Carrot chunks and Canned food
Layer 4: A piece of carrot stick sticking out and packed in place with canned food
Now, for Felix, a Kong needs to be easy.
He’s not terribly food motivated, so when the going gets tough, Felix says “forget this!”. A Felix Kong goes more like this:
Layer 1: Cheese – just a tiny piece, crammed into the tiny opening at the bottom.
Layer 2: Loosely packed jerky bits or kibbles with a small amount of canned food.
Layer 3: A piece of carrot stick sticking out and packed in place with canned food
If I’m feeling “whimsical”, I might sub canned pumpkin for canned food or kibble for treats. WHOA! Live big. I know. If I’m organized, I’ll freeze them the night before.
Koly wishes I would get just a tad more creative and really have some fun with Kong stuffing. So, we’re looking to you guys for a little inspiration.
What do you put in your dog’s Kong?

We usually just do a mix of yogurt and berries. I wish I could remember to do it in advance to stick in the freezer. BTW, soooo jealous you're out on your deck!!!

Holy fluffy do I need to get more creative with stuffing Kongs. I mix up some yogurt, banana, and peanut butter, put it in the Kong, and then freeze it. Atka's not terribly food motivated so I have to give him the "easy Kong" ;)

Wow, that is complicated! We only get a Kong on special occasions, except Bailie who gets one after a run when she is home alone while Mom walks Katie and I, but it is just some peanut butter with a few treats in the Kong, not frozen, but she loves it.

Great ideas for stuffing Kongs. I think I'm going to have to get more creative when filling Haley's food toys. I do like to freeze hers so they last longer.

We like to put a little smoothie mix in ours, and then freeze it. I am quite the busy puppy when Mom and Dad are gone from work, so freezing it takes longer to finish! :) I did a blog post about it a little while back- here's what we did!
