It’s so easy to turn your leftover turkey into dehydrator dog treats.

Turkey holidays are my favourite holidays. The food. The family. THE LEFTOVERS. Everyone at Casa de Kolchak, human and canine, lives for holiday leftovers. Even though you should be totally cautious if you decide to share a holiday meal with your dog, there are tons of things you can do to turn unseasoned leftovers into delicious dehydrator dog treats.

Determined to see just how many different dog treats could be made from turkey leftovers, I recently roasted an entire turkey, just for Kolchak.

Yeah. Yeah you guys. I know. It was more turkey than I anticipated. A lot more.

Turkey and turkey leftovers and turkey dog treats for days. I couldn’t even use it all. There are about three ziplocs crammed in my freezer waiting for me to turn them into something great.

Hi!

It says here not to store them in the fridge – so what about the other dehydrated treats? If it's pure meat (or anything, actually), does it has to be in the fridge if it is not crunchy level dry?

Also, it would be awesome if you could do some recipe on dehydrated treats where meat is combined with some veggies and maybe grain, for the dogs who have kidney disease. I am just making a batch, I made the "mashed" mixture and spread it on the Excalibur trays. It seems like they will turn out crunchy (cannot separete them from the tray right now XD), although I would prefer softer ones. I also wonder do these also need to be kept in fridge!

I'm new to this, so many questions! :D

I would only store these in the fridge if you have really good containers that will prevent moisture from getting into the treats. Fridges are naturally quite humid, so the moisture will force the treats to spoil faster. If I wanted to extend shelf life, I would probably vacuum seal them and put them in the freezer then take out as needed. That said, if you aren't drying them all the way through, they should be kept in the fridge and the shelf life would be significantly lower - like only a few days.

Since I'm not a veterinarian, I'm not qualified to recommend specific recipes for dogs with health conditions, but I can certainly come up with some mixed meat & veggie treats that you could run past your vet for approval!

I'd never thought of using leftover cooked turkey for jerky, I've always started with raw meat. This is a great excuse to use my dehydrator!

I honestly never did it until a few years ago! And then me and a cousin accidentally BOTH roasted a turkey for Thanksgiving and it was like "crap, what now?!" It's definitely a different style jerky than the kind dried from raw - crunchier - but Kol loves it that way!
