This weekend, our favourite pet store, Elemental Canine,  had an ice cream social.

Dog Ice Cream Sundae Bar

It was super fun. Lisa, the owner made these crazy awesome dog ice cream flavours and created a sundae bar with neat toppings like beef liver pieces, tiny dog cookies, apple sauce and shredded carrot. Adorbs, right? This is what was on the menu:

I’m not going to lie. Some of these flavours sounded super amazing. More than one human tried the coconut apple Sorbetto and gave it a two thumbs up rating.

For the dogs, however, there was one very clear favourite: The Cheddar Cheese Ice Cream.

Cheese Dog Ice Cream

The boys could not get enough. Seeing how much they loved it, I had to ask if we could share the recipe with you guys. Graciously, Lisa agreed to share! I went home, set to duplicate her awesome recipe. I hit a snag though: I’m super forgetful lately and I forgot to pick up cream. HOW DO YOU MAKE ICE CREAM WITH NO CREAM? {facepalm} Luckily, I’m like McGuyver and I found a solution that I already had in the fridge and that was just as fabulous: cottage cheese. Our version of this cheese dog ice cream recipe is even cheesier featuring not one, not two, but three kinds of cheese.

Do you want to spoil your dog? Try this simple recipe for a frozen dog treat they’ll love.

NOTE: Several people have reported the Freezy Pups Mix has been hard to find. No worries! You can use this powdered cheese and it works great!

Cheese Dog Ice Cream Recipe

Materials

  • 1 cup low sodium cottage cheese (I used 1%)
  • 1/4 cup skim milk
  • 1 packet White Cheddar Freezy Pups Mix
  • 1/4 cup finely grated parmesan cheese

Instructions

Combine all of the ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth.

Pour into an ice cream maker and freeze until it is the texture of soft serve. (If you don't have an ice cream maker, no worries! Place the mix in the freezer until partially frozen, stirring every 10 - 15 minutes to keep it from freezing solid.)

Scoop into individual serving bowls and freeze. Tiny mason jars or paper ice cream cups are perfect for this.

Remove one serving at a time from the freezer and let sit on the counter for several minutes to partially thaw. (My dogs prefer a soft serve texture because they're spoiled.)

If desired, top with doggy sundae toppings like Fruitables Jerky piecesWet Noses Little Stars Cheese or veggies pieces.

My dogs are wild over this dog friendly ice cream recipe and I can see it being a new Casa de Kolchak classic in no time! Does your dog like cheese?

Major thanks to Lisa at Elemental Canine in Surrey, BC not just for sharing her awesome dog friendly ice cream flavours with us, but for carrying all the boys favourite things!

How much of the cheese powder do I use in place of Freezy Pups mix? Looks like Freezy Pups isn’t available anymore so you might want to update. Thanks
