We here at Casa de Kolchak are all about the Fish Love.

I mean really, what’s not to love? Fish is delicious, nutritious and it has a tantalizing stench worse than the Daddy’s gym shoes. I don’t know what it is with you humans, just when anything gets a really good gnarly smell going on, you lot come in trying to make it smell better. HA! Just try that with fish. Fish are like the superheros of the smell world, they have super-sonic stink. All that Smelly Fishy Goodness drives the Puggle mad.

I am mad about fish, so I can not tell you how crazy-excited I was when the Mama told me that fishy treats are K9 Kamp approved. SCHWING! I may have to give up high-calorie store bought bones, illicit french fries snuck from the Nana to the puggle in quiet moments of conspiracy and most cookies, but I will keep my fish DOG-NAB-IT!

the White Fishes are Legit Good for you.

Whitefish, like cod, sole, haddock, halibut, tilapia and many others, is some of the leanest protein around. Think about it, fishes are just swimming around all day long. Imagine how great of shape you would be in if you worked out all day? You would be lean and mean! Well, whitefish are like that too.  This lean protein is usually less than 5% fat! For example, a 3 1/2 ounce serving of steamed sole only has 79 calories! IN THE WHOLE THING! As and added bonus? White fish is rich in B vitamins, which are needed to promote healthy cells and to help eliminate toxins from the body.

Fish Me Up a Snack

Mama get that butt into the kitchen and get cookin’! These fish snacks are a super easy, low maintenance treat to make and the are a meaty snack that will drive the pups wild.

  • 4 whitefish fillets – such as sole, haddock, cod, etc.
  • OPTIONAL: Vegetable purree – such as carrot, green bean or pumpkin or a fish marinade, like lemon and dill, cilantro and ginger or parsley and anchovy paste and parsley, whisked with a little evoo. Seal in a Ziploc overnight.
Dehydrator: Lay out fish chunks on dehydrator trays. Dry for 6 – 8 hours.
Oben method: Preheat oven to 200F.
Lay out fish fillets on a baking sheet. If you are super fancy spoon some veggie purree over the fish pieces.
Bake for 2 hours, flip, then bake for another 2 hours. Treats should be thoroughly cooked through.
Turn oven down to 150F. and leave treats to dry for 2-3 hours.

Once treats are crispy, break into bite sized pieces. Want to know the best part?? These little gems are about 5 calories each without the carrot and only 8 calories with it! Finally a great treat you can share without adding to your waistline!

Try it out! What do you think…do you at fish sometimes?
