I have a feeling that a few of you aren’t going to love our first treat suggestion for the new year, but seriously, it’s one of the heartthrobs of the dog treat world. Once I get even a little sniff of these in the dehydrator and I practically get heart palpitations. I sweat, my heart skips a beat and I know, I have found my one true love.
If you haven’t guessed yet today’s treat concerns matters of the heart.
(and my Mama is a dork, but if you’ve been reading us for any amount of time, you probably knew that.)
Today, we’re cooking up some beef heart. Now, I know what you’re thinking. “Kolchak, that is woofing DISGUSTING. What are you thinking?! All that Champugne you drank on New Years must have addled your brain.”
Hear me out, that’s all I ask.
(The Mama totally wanted that heading to read “Listen to Your Heart”. Please, someone make her stop.)
Heart meat is delicious and nutritious, if you happen to be a dog. Dog’s don’t buy into the the whole “ick-factor”. I’ll eat garbage, if it smells good. Some of us wouldn’t turn up our nose as at a poopsicle and others have been known to snack on those “kitty krunchies” from the litter box. (Not me, but some of my canine friends with lesser developed palates. I have a finely trained palate worthy of the Top Chefs.) Trust me, the fact it’s it’s heart meat will not gross us dogs out. In fact, since the heart is a muscle, it’s just like roast or steak or hamburger or any other muscle meat. Heart meat actually has a higher protein content than other muscle meats and its chock full of good stuff like co enzyme Q10, a bunch of those good B-vitamins and other nutrients like thiamin and selenium. It even contains amino acids though to improve metabolism and compounds that promote the production of collagen and elastin. With all this good stuff, it’s easy to fall head over tail in love with heart treats. Plus, they’ve got one of those yummy smells that will make the pups go wild!
Not to mention, since those fussy humans don’t want to it eat, it’s usually dirt cheap!
At my local grocery store, I can buy heart meat at 30 – 40% less than the other “more desirable” muscle meats. Spending less money on treats means that I can spend more of my allowance on toys. JACKPOT! (Yes, I get an allowance. The Mama stubbornly refers to it as “her paycheck”, but I think we can all agree that money is mine. I’m not spoiled, I deserve nice things. There is a difference.) Plus, since it’s meat you find at your local grocery store, you don’t have to worry about it being Made in China or of poor quality. It’s safe for you – and your dog – and even your kitty to eat.
OK, so you’re convinced right?
Sure you are. Trust Kolchak. I’m a smart little guy. I wouldn’t steer you wrong. And besides, these treats are super easy to make in the oven or in a counter top dehydrator, so you’ve got nothing to lose.
Have a Little Heart Treats
- 1 lb. beef heart (or chicken, turkey, lamb…we’re not pick! Use what you can get.)
Slice heart meat into thin strips. If you’re making kitty treats, tiny chunks are better than strips, but harder to work with!
If you are making these in the oven, pre-heat oven to 195F. If you have drying racks, lay out meat on them, place on a cookie sheet and pop them into the oven. If not, you can lay out the meat directly on your oven racks and put a cookie sheet under it on the rack below to catch any drippings.

We love to make these in our NESCO Dehydrator, since we can just plug it in and not worry about it. Simply lay out the meat on the dehydrator racks, tun it to the “meat” setting and let the machine do it’s magic.
These treats typically take about 3 – 5 hours to dry, depending on the moisture in the meat and the humidity in your area. When they’re done, these treats last up to a month in a sealed bag, 6 – 8 weeks in the fridge and a really long time in the freezer, but I bet you run out way sooner than that.
