I’ve been saving this one for a rainy day.
Or a lazy day. We don’t really care what you call this day, as long as you promise me it’s over. (That Job fellow must have been a real jerk today, because the Mama came home cranky as woof!)
One day, your dog will be a senior citizen.
It’ll happen. One day you’ll notice a little salt & pepper fur in the beard. You’ll see the step isn’t quite as spry or that nap time has become a cherished part of the day. It will sneak up on you and if you’re anything like me, you’ll rage against the idea that your pup is a Senior Pooch. (I will allow that at 7 – 9 years old, Felix is middle aged, but no more. Perhaps he’ll start lookng for a sports leash and date some 6 lb yorkie pup.)
But then you’ll accept it, not because you like the idea, but because you know that your senior has more awesome wrapped up in his little old paw, than any puppy ever could.
Think about it. By the time you hit those senior years, your pup is probably pretty well behaved. They’re probably calm and sweet and total sweet hearts. They’ve outgrown that destructive puppy stage and the over exuberant “teen” stage.  It’s not all awesome though. Along with age, comes some not so cool stuff. One of those not so cool things is tummy troubles and teeth problems. Sometimes a senior pooch needs a little help to stay happy & healthy.
When Senior Pooch asked if we could create a recipe just for senior dogs, we were excited to get started.
We started with easy to digest sweet potato and salmon but, as we started to craft these tasty treats, we realized, these aren’t really “senior treats”. They’re just delicious treats that happen to be senior friendly.

grain free salmon and sweet potato dog treat recipe
Tasty Tuesday: Sweet Potato & Salmon Bites Dog Treat Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups canned salmon or cooked, deboned fresh salmon
  • 2 cups mashed sweet potato (dry mashed with no added water/milk)
  • 1 1/2 cups garbanzo bean flour (or all purpose flour, if your dog is grain tolerant)
  • 1/2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
  • 1 egg or 1 tbsp. flax meal, mixed with 3 tbsp. water (let sit for 10 min before using)

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350F.

Open canned salmon and drain. (If you're totally fancy, you'll open them ahead of time and use the salmon juice to boil the sweet potato in.) Use a fork to finely mash the fish and break up any chunks of bone.

In a large bowl, stir together salmon & sweet potato. Add egg (or flax meal mix), parsley and baking powder, stirring well.

Sift in garbanzo bean flour, a little at a time, stirring frequently. The dough should be like drop cookies, firm enough to handle and not very sticky, but too flimsy to roll out.

Use your hands to roll dough into ball 1/4 - 1/2" balls. Arrange them on a cookie sheet and press them down with your thumb. Since they do not spread, you can place them fairly close together.

Bake for 25 - 30 minutes until the bottoms are golden brown.

Senior Scrumptitiousness: These soft baked treats are perfect for pups with dental issues.

Crispy Crunchy: If you desire a crunchy cookie, flip the cookies and return them to the oven for an additional 15 minutes. Turn oven off and allow the cookies to stay in the oven until completely cooled.

Cookies should be stored in the fridge.

My dog, Peanut, is on a single source protein diet, salmon. I made these with the flax meal for the egg and no parsley. He loves them. I did cook them the extra time to make them crunchy.

I think next time, I will turn them sooner so they are not as cooked on the bottom. Thanks for the great recipe. Peanut thanks you too.

PS. Thanks Felix for the freezer idea.

Aweeee Peanut, I get how hard that is! Felix was on single source for years! I'm so glad these work for him.

Thank you for your recipe. My standard poodle Gaia has 33 allergens. Her least offending protein source is Salmon. She is allergic to: Beef, Chicken, Duck, Kangaroo, Lamb, Pork, Turkey, Venison, Dairy, Eggs of course, many Grasses, many Trees, many Molds including Penicillin, many Weeds, Dust Mites, & Wheat. You'd be surprised how many ways they hide dairy in dog food & treats. Because of her tree allergies she can't have "Natural Smoke Flavoring" Anything, which is why her current Salmon treats I buy ready made make her eyes swollen & runny. And she has hives all over her. Also the expensive dry food she eats i found out has Chicken Broth in it. I don't know Why they would use that. Chicken is one of the Top allergens for dogs. If you have Any other recipes that you think she could eat, or you think could be altered with "other" ingredients, please let me know. I'm a disabled senior living alone and her expenses (food, treats, & meds) are killing me financially. I don't begrudge my baby, but she does eat better than I do. It would be nice to have recipes that would save me $$$ Thank you again for this fantastic recipe. Especially the option to go dairy free. I can't tell you how much it means to me to have a recipe for a treat I can give her without making her sick. God Bless

I am so so happy that this is something she can have!

What foods can she eat, other than salmon? I'm happy to make some suggestions or work on something new for her!
