It’s Earth Day!

If Mama’s third grade teacher is to be believed, we’re all supposed to gather up hand to paw and sing some sort of torch song about grand ol’ Mother Earth and her beauty, then eat something green that tastes like slime and spend the day picking up trash in the gross part of town. Mama says, “The best part of being a grown up is that you get to do things your own way.”

We’re going to celebrate Earth Day by going green Doggystyle.

If you get our Weekly Woof newsletter, then you already know that we were barking about ways to reduce your dog’s ridiculously large carbon pawprint. Today we’re taking it one step further and looking for ways we can reduce, reuse and recycle every day items into fabulous doggy essentials!

Here are some of our favourite DIY Dog Posts made from Upcycled Materials!

 1. DIY T-Shirt Dog Toy from She Knows

Let’s face it, everyone’s humans have a bunch of old t-shirts that should have hit the junk pile a million years ago. Put them to good use by turning them into these super easy braided t-shirt dog toys. The Daddy better keep his eyes on his crappy t-shirt collection. This idea has the Mama chortling with evil joy.

2. Cozy Sweater dog Bed from Apartment Therapy

Ok, can I just say? How adorable is this?  I’m tempted to go through the Mama’s closet and steal good sweaters just to get this one. This dog bed made entirely from old sweaters looks so cozy and comfy that we have to try this.

3. DIY Dog Treat Jar from Blue Skies and She

We love this simple way to take an old jar and make it fabulous. You can find everything you need to make this DIY Dog treat jar at the dollar store and it looks so chic!

4. Suitcase Small Dog Bed from Design^Sprout

Kill two birds with one paw. Make a dog bed out of your human’s suitcase and you won’t need to worry about them travelling anymore! (I wonder if I can do this to the Mama’s suitcase before BlogPaws?)

5. Recycle the Hardware from your Collar with Michelle Patterns

Do you have a ratty old dog collar that needs a facelift? Chances are, the hardware is still just fine. Breath new life into an old collar with this tutorial.

6. DIY Krinkle Toys from Rover

Koly and Luda LOVE their water bottle toys, but it’s not safe to let them play with plain ol’ plastic. (Even that flimsy bottle plastic can be sharp in a dog’s mouth.) Solve the problem with this brilliant solution for making your own Bottle Buddies.

Do you have an eco-friendly DIY project you love?

Great Ideas! DIY is so much fun especially when it is eco-friendly. We reuse old things like dog toys, dog beds, towels and blankets and make them into new toys for Luna (after we give them a good washing of course!) One of Luna's favorite toys came from part of her old bed. She loves it!

That sweater dog bed is precious!! It looks so comfy. Maybe hubby's sweaters need to be cleaned out... Hmm... My favorite eco-friendly DIY is a non-toxic, earth- and pet-friendly dry shampoo. I mix baking soda with a few drops of essential oil, rub it into my boys' coats, then brush out. It gets rid of oil and leaves them smelling fresh.

That sounds amazing! We buy a product that is pretty much the same thing.
